A Seattle homeowner's old red clay brick chimney was showing its age — mortar joints failing, brickwork cracking. In our rainy climate, ignored chimney issues become water intrusion and draft problems. We called it for what it was and fixed it with straightforward, careful masonry.
We pressure-washed away decades of grime and moss first, so we could see the structure we were actually working with. No hiding the problem spots.
Then tuckpointing: we removed the failing mortar a little at a time to keep things stable, and tucked in fresh, high-quality mortar that matches the original look and stands up to Seattle's freeze-thaw cycles. Out with the weak, in with the strong.
Cracked bricks were replaced or stabilized so the wall reads as one piece, not a patch. A protective coating on the cap seals the top against future water. A failing chimney stops being a liability and goes back to being the part of the house nobody has to worry about.
