How to Repair This Rotten Home Entryway Deck.

Here is a picture of the entryway prior to any work being done. The goal here was to pull up a few deck boards to assess the extent of the wear and tear damage to the deck, as well as pull out a few 4x4 posts as rotting was noticed at their base.

Upon further inspection, it seems that almost all of the entry decks will need to be replaced. The 5 joists that the deck boards lay across are rotted to the core, while 13 of the joists are only secured with two nails, no brackets.

More than half of the 4x4 support posts are rotted and their base as well as unsafely secured to the ledger, and will therefore need to be removed and replaced

here is the deck now.

you can see in our close-up images of the joists and ledger showing rot as well.

After assessing the extent of the damage, a materials pricing list was made along with an estimate of the time it would take to complete the repair and replacement.

The next steps are to continue removing all deck boards and 4x4 posts, then remove all joists in between. At least the first 15ft of the Ledger on either side should be replaced, then all 2x8 joists would be replaced and secured with brackets. then new 4x4 posts will be installed and secured with thru lock bolts.

Lastly, new deck boards will be cut to size to replace the old rotting boards and the project will be complete!
